How Do You Research For Copy?
We all know that writing extremely good copy requires an intense amount of research, as well as a great amount of knowledge of what the crowd hungers for... as well as their emotional buttons and hidden desires.
I've seen a lot of Eric's copy for AR, salespages and even the products he sells... He has a very hit-it-straight kind of style to make his copy very entertaining. A challenging, take-it-or-lose-it kind of copy style that seems to be able to trigger a purchase decision without all those flashy "income video/screenshots" or numerous testimonials... Certainly gems to take away.
I've also recently seen one copy on the WF for a WSO which was really good at building *rapport* with its target audience. So good it literally snagged me by the top 1/4 of the whole copy, and I actually bought the small investment because of the copy and not the product! No, it's not the Shiny object syndrome.
Alright, so I guess there are a few people here who actually write copy or know copy to a greater extent than I do, so I'd like to know how you actually start researching for copy.
If you were starting from a clean slate, what would you do for...
- Customer research?
- Competition research?
- Keyword research?
- Offer research?
- USP / benefits research?
Regards,
Winston

Wonstont: I dreaded having to write copy for my sales page. I started a couple of different times and then said "screw this! I'll just get someone to write it for me." But, I didn't know of any good junior copywriters that I could afford and the one that I contacted was too busy to help at the time.
I got my product finished in the meantime. I've watched all of Erics videos on copywriting and also have read a good book by Ray Edwards called "Writing Riches." A good read if you're interested in learning about writing good copy.
I finally sat down and started writing my copy and it really wasn't as hard as I thought it was since I already had my product created. I already knew the benefits of my product, and I knew my own personal story to tell for how I created my product. So, I think having my product created first helped me get through it a little easier.
But, I've also heard Eric say that he sometimes writes the copy before he ever even creates the product. So, I guess it's all up to you.
As far as competition research, that should be a no-brainer. Just search for other products like yours and maybe even buy their stuff to spy on them. Thats what I did. I bought a product on clickbank that performs very well and has a good reputation in my niche. I then studied the entire sales process and took notes during the sales funnel.
Hope that helps. I'm a newbie at writing copy so hopefully Eric will chime in on this.
